Arm Pain and/or
Numbness
Arm pain and / or numbness are common complaints from
patients, and are very treatable problems. Many people have no incident or
accident that appears to have caused an injury that would lead to their
symptoms.
One cause of arm symptoms is a cervical (neck) disc
injury or degeneration that directly compresses the nerve root. Along with
pain, the patient usually has significant loss of muscle strength, loss of
reflexes and changes in sensation in the arm and shoulder. This is a
painful and debilitating injury, yet is very treatable through
chiropractic care.
Another cause is a subluxation of a lower cervical
vertebra. The vertebra becomes rotated, the surrounding muscles spasm, and
mechanical compression injures the nerve root. Associated with the
subluxation is neck soreness and loss of movement.
The most common cause of arm symptoms is a
combination of a vertebral subluxation and muscle entrapment of the nerve,
or referred pain from a muscle. There are three areas where a muscle
compresses the nerves that feed the sensation to the arms, each identified
through specific tests.
Referred Muscle Pain is a very common cause of
neck, shoulder, back and arm pain. (see Referred
Muscle Pain)
Lastly, and least common are compression of the
nerve by tumors, and heart and other organ related referred pain. If I
were to suspect through your examination that your pain was not treatable
through chiropractic, I would make an immediate referral to a medical
specialist.
