Hip, Buttock and Leg Pain

Leg, hip and buttock pain have many treatable causes. Most causes of pain fall into one of these categories: sciatic pain, referred muscle pain, joint pain, bone fracture, spinal stenosis, neurogenic and intermittent claudication, muscle strain, overuse myofascial pain, illio-tibial Band Syndrome (ITBS), and tendonitis.

Symptoms in the buttock and side of the hip are actually more common complaints than leg pain, and many times are the origin of leg symptoms. For example, when over-used, the postural gluteus medius muscle causes deep hip pain as well as refers pain down the back and side of the leg to the ankle. Where many doctors would immediately see this pain as sciatica, a thorough muscle, joint and nerve evaluation would identify the true cause of the pain as an injured and spasmed muscle with ITBS. Treatment of this injury as a sciatica would be minimally if at all successful, whereas treatment with stretching, ultrasound and toning exercise would have a high rate of success.

Since there are so many causes of leg pain, a thorough history and examination are required by a trained professional to identify the cause of your problem, and the best treatment for it.
